View from The Mound

Edinburgh’s November is again cold. But surprisingly I am really enjoying it. I guess rather than looking down on the ground when I walk, I have started to look up at the sky..

My daily stroll up and down a hill to go to work has helped me appreciate all the things around me. People, building, weather, scent of the city. Like any spot of this world we live in, it has a lot to offer. And with my mind realising more and more how time passes by so quickly, I am yet again in my memory making mode.

One complex truth: I am alive.

One huge summer is again over. September has reached us. A new start for many.. Starting school for the first time or going into your university life.. A new job maybe? Or just the acknowledgement that we are not far from a new year; 2013..

In any case, to those who are reading this and to all those who need to have a better start; wish you all the best. Hope that this September is a turning point to a more indulging life with friends and family.

I will be turning 20 in 14 days. So I guess this will have to be a turning point for me. Cannot wait for what is yet to come.

Month of July in England.. i would have loved to call it a peculiar weather for this time of the year but no.. It was and is expected.. I had to drive 20mph today because I couldn’t see what was in front of me.. Water drops exploding on my windscreen..

So after getting back home safely the only thing to do I guess is to sit back and relax.. Nice glass of wine and a meal.. Going back to my warm bed.. Tomorrow is a new day..

It’s everything.. Or nothing..

The things that we do daily.. Things that have become a part of our routine like getting a fresh cup of coffee with one sugar in the morning.. Are they really everything or nothing? What about the big achievements in our life? Job promotions or coming first in a race.. Maybe they are everything.. Or nothing..

It is the value that we give to our actions that mean everything or nothing…

Why is it that we only know numerical values nowadays? Is it all about what number there is on those very important pieces of papers that we carry in our wallets? What if one day I decide that £50 is 50p for me? Of course everyone will think I’m daft but seriously.. Just why do we not think more about the value of our own gestures, actions and thoughts.. Maybe that cup of coffee after all is our morning boost and key to our productivity during the day..

Yes, money.. A universal and controversial ‘value-o-meter’… Or in other words a constant bearing.. For some it is the key to their life.. For others having less means less headaches.. But in any case you need it.. On the other hand, ideologies is very different.. It is also a bearing for your life.. But they are subject to change.. One day you believe strongly about something, the next, you don’t.. So, which one means everything or nothing?

I guess what it boils down to is that we can make the choice.. We can either give that ‘thing’ enough value so that it means everything for us and ultimately for the world or we can just sit in the world of nothing..

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Why do we take our basic rights for granted? Do we think everyday about the fact that we have freedom of speech, right to life and freedom of thought, conscience and religion? I think we should at least remind ourselves of our basic rights in order to acknowledge the true value of our lives..

It is true that these rights and many others are violated in many parts of the world however, if you are lucky enough to live in a country where your rights are protected by the rule of law, then consider this, are you fulfilling these rights? Are you making your voice heard about issues in your community or around the world?

To be truthful, I am scared about talking about certain topics around people.. Nowadays everyone has to be politically correct that we cannot express our true thoughts.. If your thoughts and beliefs don’t fit into a certain category, then it is hard to speak out.. Telephones being listened to, emails being hacked into… We cannot trust technology..

The top heavy hierarchy of our society makes it difficult for ‘commoners’ to have enough power to bring about change.. The advantages and disadvantages can be debated however, it is always important to have an ongoing and healthy communication between all levels..

Big Brother

Image

I can feel the Big Brother around me.. Can you? Everyday we are recorded by CCTV cameras.. Our telephones can be tracked.. It has become too transparent.. Privacy itself has become expensive..

If we are all created equally, then we should all have an equal chance to bring about change as long as it is embedded in reason and the well-being of our society..

Height doesn’t matter???

What makes us so happy when we buy shoes? Why is it not the same with our other purchases such as food or drinks? Why do we want to step on the ground with beautiful creations?

The answer is simple.. We obviously want to travel in style.. Shoes can make us taller, feel comfortable, give us confidence, power and beauty.. High heels can even make our legs look thinner and toned.. Don’t you think we expect too much from shoes? Be comfortable, beautiful, high or flat, the right price, made out of the right material and from the right brand.. I guess that is fashion for you in a nutshell..

The days we suffer for wearing high heels.. The pain from standing up for too long with 12cm high heels.. Every city woman gets a taste of this pain at least once.. However, we never give up.. Everyday we are lured back into wearing those carefully picked heels..

Even though I am saying ‘we’ in this article, I never wear heels. I only own one pair and they are pushed right back in the shoe cupboard.. My height is 179cm so I guess I can get away with not wearing heels.. Don’t get me wrong, I love high heels.. And I would love to be able to wear them.. But one, I can’t walk in them and two I feel like a tower above everyone when I wear those 9+cm high heels.. Maybe one day i will get used to it.. And my flat shoes and boots will be replaced by heels.. Who knows?

So, does height matter? I don’t think so.. As long as the shoes make us feel the way we want them to their job is complete..
